Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.): The Infallible who had the Prophet (p.)'s Morals

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

His Eminence, the Religious Authority Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Ramadan, 15th 1430 H. - September, 4th 2009. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon


Allah says in His Glorious Book: "Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying"(33:33).

This Ayah was revealed to the Prophet(p.) when he was at Um-Salama's, one of his wives. The Messenger (p.) called for Fatima, Ali, Al-Hassan, and Al-Hussein(a.s), covered them with a cloak, and said: "These are the people of my house; keep away the uncleanness from them and purify them a thorough purifying." Um Salama then asked, "Am I with them, O Messenger of Allah?" And he answered, "You will gain good! You will gain good!" This proves that the verse was not talking about the Prophet's wives, but rather about these infallible five whom Allah has kept uncleanness (all sins and deviations from the right) away from them.

Al-Hassan: The inheritor of the Prophet (p.)'s morals

On this day, the fifteenth of the month of Ramadan, Imam Al-Hassan was born at Al-Madina Al-Munawara. He was the first child to be born to Fatima and Ali (a.s.). It is narrated that the Prophet(p.) told Imam Al-Hassan(a.s): "You are like me in your manners and in your features." Anas bin Malik says: "No one looked like the Messenger more than Al-Hassan (a.s.) Bin Ali." Imam As-Sadiq (a.s.) cites his grandfather, Imam Zein Al-Abideen (a.s.), as saying: "Al-Hassan Bin Ali (a.s.) was the most and greatest worshiper in his times, the most ascetic person (since he had a lot of money that he used to give to the poor). When he went to Hajj (pilgrimage), he went on foot, and mostly barefooted. He always used to mention Allah in all conditions and situations. He was the most truthful and the most logical. When he approached the door of the Masjid (mosque), he would utter the following words: "O Lord! Your guest is at your door. O Generous! The transgressor has come to You. Forgive my ugly deed with your generosity. O the most Generous."

Muhammad Bin Is'hak says that nobody has reached a level of respect and honor after the Messenger(p) like that attained by Al-Hassan bin Ali(a.s), whom the people used, when he sat in front of his house, to stop walking on the road leading to it as a token of respect to him. Then, when he used to get inside, the people would start passing again.

Al-Hassan's status

An-Nisa'i narrates that the Messenger(a.s) said about Al-Hassan(a.s) and Al-Hussein(a.s) when they were on his lap: "O God, You know that I love them, thus, I ask You to love them." He (p.) also said: "Al-Hassan and Al-Hussein are the masters of the youth of Heaven." Zaid Bin Arkam said: the Messenger (p.) said: "Indeed, I am leaving among you, that which if you hold fast to them, you shall not be misguided after me. One of them is greater than the other: (the first is) the book of Allah is a rope extended from the sky to the earth, and (the second is) my family, the people of my house (Ahl Al-Beit), and they shall not split until they meet me at the Howd. See how you deal with them after me."

The wise manner of calling

On the educational level, which teaches us the right way to preach and call for our religion, it is narrated that Al-Hassan and Al-Hussein once passed by an old man who was performing ablution in a wrong way. They wanted to teach him, but without hurting his feelings. Thus, they came to him and said: "We want you to tell us who is performing his ablution rightly and who is not." When the old man saw that they were both performing exactly the same moves, he understood that he was the one who was wrong.

It is also reported that Al-Hassan (a.s.) gave half of his money to the poor twice.  

The Quran and the Prophet's traditions are inseparable

A dispute aroused amongst the Muslims on whether to write down the traditions of the Messenger of Allah (p.) or limit their knowledge to the Quran. Some preferred to stick to the Quran only so as not to mix the traditions with the Quran. However, Imam Ali and Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) noted that the Quran's style was different, and they opted for writing down the traditions of the Prophet (p.) so as to preserve them, since they would not be preserved but by writing them down.

Al-Hassan (a.s.)'s life stages

We notice that Imam Al-Hassan(a.s.) went through several phases throughout his life. In the first phase, he was raised, along with his brother Al-Hussein (a.s.), by the Messenger of Allah who offered them all his love and affection. Moreover, they used to grasp the words of the Prophet (p.) and relate them to their mother, Fatima (a.s.). They were also raised by their parents, Imam Ali and Sayyeda Fatima (a.s.), and Al-Hassan (a.s.) used to stay up with his mother while performing the night prayer and listen to her asking for forgiveness for all the believers and praying for them and not herself, so he asked her: "

Why do not you pray for yourself?" She answered: "My son, the neighbors come before the household members."

The second phase was after the death of the Prophet (p.) and their mother, Fatima (a.s.). Imam Al-Hassan and Imam Al-Hussein (a.s.) stayed with their father, Imam Ali (a.s.) learning from him what the Messenger of Allah (p.) had taught him as well as from his own thoughts and experiences. They lived that phase during which Imam Ali (a.s.) was deprived from his right to the caliphate, yet he remained patient. During his rule, Imam Ali (a.s.) depended on Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) and looked after teaching and guiding him. He also left him one of the best wills of testimony that included a lot of information about the moral, spiritual, and social systems.

After the martyrdom of Imam Ali (a.s.), Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) was pledged allegiance as a caliph, but at that time, the Islamic reality was confused and divided and Muawiya managed to win over the chiefs of the tribes by means of money and appointed himself caliph on the Muslims at a time when Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) tried to make legitimacy the basis of rule. However, Muawiya bribed most of Al-Hassan (a.s.)'s army and succeeded in containing them, thus gravely weakening Al-Hassan (a.s.) who was thinking about how to preserve what is left of the opposition that followed the path of Imam Ali (a.s.). Thus, Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) signed an agreement with Muawiya, since the former was wise enough to see where the Islamic interest was. Moreover, the circumstances surrounding Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) were not as those that surrounded Al-Hussein (a.s.) later on; however, Al-Hassan did set the favoring conditions was for Al-Hussein (a.s.)'s revolution. Unfortunately, Muawiya poisoned Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.), and he martyred after carrying out his missionary message.

The Imam's enlightening words

On this anniversary, we should try to benefit from the words of Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.). Janada Bin Abi Umayya said to Imam Al-Hassan who was on his deathbed that eventually: "Advise me, O son of the Messenger of Allah." He (a.s.) said: "Yes, get ready for your journey – towards the Resurrection Day – and get your provisions before your death arrives – the best of the provisions is piety – and know that you are seeking the world and death is seeking you. Do not load the worry of the Day which had not yet come upon your present day – make plans for your future, but do not overstress yourself so as to live in a difficult psychological state – And beware that you do not achieve and attain a wealth above your enemy, but you are a trustee of its for another person – you use what you are in need for and you preserve the rest for your inheritors – and do know that there is an account for what is lawful and permitted in this world, and there lies punishment and retribution for what is prohibited, and there is reproof in its paradox and doubt. So suppose the world as if it is a dead corpse – when you have to –take out of it what is sufficient for you; so, if it was Halal, then you would have adopted piety and asceticism; if it was Haram, then there will be no load upon you since you would have taken from it just as if you had taken from dead corpse. And if there is reproof, then that reproof is easy. And work for your World as if you will live here forever, and work for you Hereafter as if you will die tomorrow – you should make balance between your plans for the future and your responsibilities before what Allah has ordained you – If you want to be powerful and respected without the need of being a member of a tribe or a ruler, then step out of the disgrace of disobeying Allah and step in the greatness of obeying Him."

It was reported that Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) said: "If people debate the issue among them, they will surely find the right way." So, do not hold on to your personal opinions when doing something, but rather seek advice of those who are experienced, for when minds join one another, the doors of guidance and truth will open. 

He (a.s.) also said: "O son of Adam, if you stay away from what Allah has forbidden, you would be a worshipper, and if you are content with what Allah has given yon, you would be rich, and if you are good to your neighbors you would be a Muslim, and treat people the way you like to be treated, you would be just. You have seen before you people who have accumulated a lot of wealth – without them caring if they got their wealth from Halal or Haram means – and built houses and had a lot of hope, but their buildings turned into ruins and their houses became graves. O son of Adam, you start ending your life the day you were born. So, make sure that you take from what you have in your hands to use it in what you would face in the Hereafter, for the believer takes along provisions, while the infidel cares about pleasures".

This is Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.), the Imam that should have been obeyed, who lived for the sake of the Message and emerged from between the Message to serve Allah, His Messenger, and the Muslims. Peace be upon him, the day he was born, the day he passed away, and the day he will be brought back to life. 

The Second Sermon

The Jewish colonization: An American blessing and an Arab submission

On the Palestinian scene, the American and European envoys intensify their visits to the region to pave the way for the Arab regimes and the Palestinian Authority to accept the Israeli conditions to begin the negotiations with the enemy. Official Zionist reports have stated lately that the colonization activities are being enhanced in the West Bank and Eastern Jerusalem, and the Judaization of Jerusalem is going on with an accelerated pace.

It has become clear that the American Administration has succumbed to the Israeli conditions before the new rounds of negotiation that would follow Obama's speech in the United Nations at the end of this month are to begin. The United States has given the enemy the green light to continue its settlement activities in East Jerusalem, and practically drive the Arab officials to conclude a settlement, even with the official ruling out of implementing the right of return and even removing it from the agenda of the negotiations.

Thus, any talk about freezing or slowing down the construction activities in the settlements aims only at relieving some of the Arab regimes' embarrassment before their peoples to embark on normalizing the ties with the enemy upon the request of the Americans to join the so-called peace process in the region.

An international conspiracy against the Palestinians

The scheme, whose lines and goals are set by the Americans and Zionists, is based on convincing the Arabs and the Palestinians to accept what will be left from the West Bank, after the end of the negotiations, on which will be established the unviable disarmed Palestinian state. Once we realize that what will be left is no more than 42%, due to the colonization expansion and going forth with building the isolating wall, we would realize the scope of the conspiracy that the nation is meant to sign on. Moreover, we would realize that the enemy seeks to penetrate the West Bank and disrupt its stability by means of wars and moving internal strife.

We warn the Palestinians from the nations' game whose steps are being implemented by those who have put their stakes on the enemy and the American Administration and virtually have become their agents, whether at the Arab or Palestinian arena. We also warn the official and unofficial Arab and Islamic organizations from engaging in this dangerous conspiracy, because the peoples, even if they were besieged with intelligence agencies and emergency regimes or subject to an economic siege, will act to fail all the arrogant projects whose aim is to destroy the nation in its present time and future.

The Arab-Iranian dialogue: Reasons and objectives

On another level, we have heard the talk of the Arab League Secretary-General who said that Iran is meddling in the Arab affairs, and at the same time, calling the Arab states to engage in a dialogue with Iran…

We do agree with the Arab League Secretary-General that the Arab states should engage in a serious dialogue with Iran on the basis of benefiting from the Iranian scientific experiences and making use of Iran's different potentials and political stands that support those who confront the strategic danger, represented by the Zionist entity, on the entire nation, and not on the basis of signifying that there exists serious problems with the Islamic Republic. We believe that Iran's only problem is represented in its decisive stand against the enemy and its limitless support to the Palestinian people and resistance factions. Were that not the case, the Arabs would have rushed into its laps and would have embarked on entering with it into a strategic axis at the security and political levels, since some Arab regimes have set in their political programs certain rules of getting close from whoever gets close to Israel and moving away from whoever moves away from it. As such, they wanted the treaties of security and joint defense to serve the others and not the interests of the nation.

The Arab League fails to uphold its responsibilities

We had expected the Arab League to fulfill its duty in defending the Palestinians in the heart of Jerusalem and who are kicked out by the occupiers from their homes and thrown out, or ending the fights in Yemen to protect the Yemenis and consecrate their unity, and blocking the road before strife that is almost starting to expand and hold tight onto several positions, thus, endangering Yemen's unity, future, and fate.

We call on the Arabs at the level of regimes and in the official organizations and the Arab League to wake up and take a look around, because burying the heads in the sand and ignoring the real danger of the enemy on the nation will bring about nothing but shame and will cost the Arab peoples huge prices from their political and economic capital, and from its generations' future, as well as its social and military security…etc.

Lebanon: Political infections worsen

Lebanon has become a victim of several chronic diseases as a result of the internal response to the external dictations even at the level of forming the Cabinet and distributing the ministries.

We are concerned that Lebanon would fall victim to these dictations that take the form of advice. We are also worried from the consequences of the international and regional pressures that made the ministries trusts to foreign axes, thus tying Lebanon to the external project which has the Israeli security as its top priority, and which is subject to the enemy's short and long term calculations.

We call on the Lebanese officials to break loose from the pressures of the international axes and step out of the circle of external instructions to form a real national unity Cabinet and guarantee their country's future and provide real protection to their people and country.
