In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
His Eminence, the Religious Authority Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Zul Kaada, 19th 1430 H. - November, 6th 2009. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.
The First Sermon
In the way they belong to Islam, Muslims adopt different trends and schools; thus, they differ in their horizons, thoughts, and approaches, because belonging to Islam could not be restricted to one circle, but rather there are diverse lines and rulings and courses.
It was narrated that the Messenger of Allah (p.) once said that "Islam consists of three storeys: a lower one, an upper one, and an uppermost one. The lower one is Islam into which all Muslims have entered; and if you ask any of them, he will say: I am a Muslim – for he would have professed the two testimonies: "I testify that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger." Anyone who professes that and commits himself to it is a Muslim: he would have the rights and obligations of Muslims, and his blood, money, and honor would be preserved– As for the upper one, it is where their deeds contend for precedence, since some Muslims are better than others –the issue lies in the diversity of the deeds, for Allah says in His Glorious Book: "Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you." (49:13). He who embraces righteousness and tries to reach its highest degrees will attain a high level, if his deeds were of the kind that brings him closer to Allah. As for the uppermost one – the highest rank – it is struggle (Jihad) for the sake of Allah – in all its forms, whether Jihad by money or by one's self, or a Jihad for the sake of all what elevates the nation and strengthens its position and stand – which only the best can attain."
How Muslims are weighed?
The Messenger of Allah (p.) says: "Muslims are brothers – for Allah says in His Glorious Book: "The believers are but brethren." (49:10). The believers are the Muslims who have professed Islam and recognized it – no one has superiority over another except by piety." There is no other trait by which a Muslim can have superiority over another, be it a superiority in the lineage, money, position, or power, for what brings man closer to Allah, the Most Exalted, and makes him a Muslim before Allah is righteousness, for Allah says: "Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you." (49:13).
Once, the Messenger of Allah (p.) was asked: How could one become a true Muslim? He (p.) answered: "Say I believe in Allah and then remain steadfast upon that." The Prophet (p.) deduced his words from the following verse: "Surely those who say, Our Lord is Allah, then they continue on the right way, they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve." (46:13). This unification principle opens up to all what man abides by whilst worshipping Allah and obeying Him in all what He legalized and wanted people to follow. The phrase "our Lord is Allah" refers to the unification of Allah and remaining steadfast upon that, and remaining steadfast means to start and end with Allah's unification without deviating from this path, so as to meet Allah as a Muslim.
The Messenger of Allah (p.) also says: "Islam is sublime morals." Being a Muslim requires having sublime morals. In another tradition, the Prophet (p.) says: "I have been sent to complete sublime morals," for Allah wanted people, in all ages and since he created Adam, to attain good and high morals that connect them to one another and bring them closer to each other, so as to complement and help one another in all their affairs. Thus, every Heavenly Message was sent to call for a certain moral trait, until the Messenger of Allah (p.) was sent with the religion of the Right and came up with a comprehensive code of morals by means of the legislations of Islam, as well as its concepts and the lines in which it moves.
The true Muslim
The Messenger of Allah (p.) says: "The Muslim is the brother to the Muslim; he cannot oppress him or curse him," for the relation between one Muslim and another is based on brotherhood, knowing that a one does not oppress his brother, but rather grants him all his rights and a Muslim respects his fellow Muslim and does not curse him, even if they disagree over any issue, for Muhammad (p.) has said that cursing fellow Muslims is a sin, as Allah considers anyone who curses his Muslim brother to be disobedient to Him. In another tradition, the Prophet (p.) says: "The Muslim is the brother to the Muslim; he does not give him up, he does not lie at him, and he does not let him down," that is, if the Muslim was subjected to an aggression by others, then his fellow Muslim ought to support him if he was wronged.
In a tradition of Imam As-Sadiq (a.s.), he says: "The Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe – he uses his hands for the good only, whether to offer help, aid, or support – and the believer is one whom the believers trust with their lives and their property" – he should preserve people's money and souls.
The Prophet (p.) also says: "Muslims are like the human body which if any organ is in pain, the other organs will look after it," for a Muslim ought to take the concerns and pains of other Muslims into consideration. He (p.) also says: "Whosoever does not care about Muslims' affairs is not a Muslim; and whosoever hears a man calling: O Muslims! And does not respond is not a Muslim." Man ought to feel that he is a part of the Islamic nation so that if it faces any problems or any kind of aggression, he ought to defend his nation and look after it. Looking after the Muslims' affairs is not merely a psychological or an emotional state, but rather it is an issue related to how could he find the best means and methods to help the Muslims to solve their problems and support them against whoever seeks to fail them.
This is also the case when the Muslim lives under the pressure of the aggression of the arrogant people and the unbelievers and the oppressors, and calls for support and help. Those who do not carry out their duty and remain neutral are not true Muslims, because belonging to Islam is to belong to the Islamic nation as well, rendering its concerns and issues as one's own, especially during this stage of our public life and at all levels. Actually, there is an ongoing war waged by the arrogant, the atheists and the oppressors against Muslims, targeting their economy, politics, and security, yet we see that Muslims are not cooperating with one another to face this threat, while the arrogant powers are taking the lives of Muslims as well as confiscating their freedoms, lands, and money, at a time Muslims are not responding to the callers for help. Moreover, certain Muslim officials are collaborating with the enemy and the arrogant people, just as few Islamic states are collaborating with America that is confiscating the Muslims' entire life. The Prophet (p.) says that a true Muslim is the one who shoulders the concern of Islam, and the one who responds to the calls of Muslims and supports them to confront the hardships that face them.
Islam is, in its ultimate meaning, a religion that is based on the relationship with Allah, just as Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) said: "When his Lord said to him, Be a Muslim, he said: I submit myself to the Lord of the worlds," (02:131), and: "And the same did Ibrahim enjoin on his sons and (so did) Yaqoub. O my sons! Surely Allah has chosen for you (this) faith, therefore die not unless you are Muslims." (02:132). In the Quran, it is mentioned that Yusuf (a.s.) says: "My Lord! Thou hast given me of the kingdom and taught me of the interpretation of sayings: Originator of the heavens and the earth! Thou art my guardian in this world and the hereafter; make me die a Muslim and join me with the good." (12:101).
Man ought to preserve and look after his Islam, and to enroot it deep in his heart, mind, and soul, so that we would become a unified and strong nation that does not allow anyone to hurt its dignity and honor. Nowadays, the Muslim population has reached around one and a half billion people; however, their problem lies in the fact that they have turned themselves into downtrodden people, for they have not chosen the option of being strong and powerful. Therefore, our duty is to communicate and cooperate with the Muslims, turning ourselves into a power that is capable of facing all the arrogant and oppressing forces.
This is what true belonging to Islam means, for it is not merely a word, but rather a stand man ought to take throughout his life, so as to meet Allah as a pure and devoted Muslim.
The Second Sermon
American adoption of the Israeli settlement policy
Once again, the US Administration reveals the reality of its position vis-ŕ-vis the Palestinian people's cause, through its adoption of the Israeli conditions, when the US Secretary of State announced that the settlement activities are rightful, from a historical point of view. She also said that suggestions of the Israeli Prime Minister about the settlements are unprecedented. She speaks the same language of her husband, former US President, Bill Clinton, who used to stress that his country should prevent Israel from taking a lot of risks in the settlement process.
After she had given her instructions with an arrogant tone, saying: "I want to see both sides starting negotiations as soon as possible," she returned to the method of her former counterpart, Condoleezza Rice, and grouped the foreign ministers of the moderate Arab states alongside officials from Morocco, Iraq, and Egypt, to urge them to succumb to the American desire in pushing the Palestinians to negotiate with the enemy "without any preconditions." This means Arab and Palestinian surrender to the enemy's conditions with which the settlement activities would continue but with new terminologies and expressions that are used for the first time and that speak about "restricting" the settlement activities after the plan was to cease them, freeze, restrain, and finally curb them. This means we ought to surrender to the loss of Palestine, and the fall of the remaining areas from the West Bank in the hands of the occupation and settlers, in addition to the swift attempts to evacuate the people of Jerusalem, and invade Al-Aqsa Mosque. This empties the Palestinian cause from its content at the outset of the negotiations, which will be more like exchanging points of views between a wolf and a sheep!!
The Americans – who give the Israeli entity all the chances, and cover up for its positions and terrorist behaviors and rapid settlement building in the lands that were identified by the UN resolutions as "occupied lands" – announce that they have run out of patience on Iran regarding its nuclear file, although Iran has dealt positively with all the approaches, and has only expressed technical reservations to ensure that it will not pay money and send uranium without getting fuel in return, as the case was with France earlier.
A losing American bid
The United States, under Obama, supervises nowadays the rehabilitation of the Israeli Army through the joint maneuvers with it, and which provide Israel with more offensive and defense power, namely in the missile field, in an attempt to render Israel more capable of staging wars and occupying more Arab lands. The United States should realize that the process of building power is not restricted to one aspect, and thus, the American-Israeli wager on achieving the so-called peace through imposing defeat on the Arab and Islamic opposition forces, is now a losing wager. Their threat to employ power against Israel and others raises many question marks about the project of the US Administration in the region, and whether it is a peace process or a project that prepares for huge wars in the region.
Divide and rule
When we ponder over the American strategy followed in Afghanistan and Pakistan, we find that the US Administration urges the Afghani and Pakistani officials to practice the highest levels of violence in dealing with their countries. It also encourages them to further pursue the fighters in many heavily populated areas, from which hundreds of thousands of people are displaced and humanitarian catastrophes are on the rise considering the increasing number of the displaced people. We also realize that the American project is based on self-destruction of the capacities and abilities of the Islamic world. It rests on keeping this world busy with more internal wars for reasons that have to do with power and inheritance, as well as sectarian reasons. As such, all the countries that are under the US hegemony fund and arm the extremist and takfiri groups, in order to foment more catastrophes and social calamities in the Islamic world, which we witness every day in Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, and others.
Confronting the American scheme
We want our Arab and Islamic peoples, namely the Palestinian and Iraqi peoples, as well as our peoples in Afghanistan and Pakistan, to know who the United States is in its support to the enemy of the nation. We want them to know that the United States insists on plundering the wealth of the Arabs and Muslims, and that it seeks non-stop to ignite confessional and sectarian and tribal sedition within the Islamic reality, or to keep this sedition ongoing, even if this requires from it to pay billions to this or that regime to keep the fire of internal feuds ignited.
We want the peoples to use all methods and means to preserve their unity, because the unity of the nation secures its power, and represents a fortified castle that prevents the international powers from plundering its wealth. It also prevents the Zionist forces from continuing its project to swallow up the remaining lands of Palestine and look for more wars against the opposition countries and resistance movements.
Lebanon between optimism and pessimism
As far as Lebanon is concerned, it hears good news sometimes and sad ones at other times regarding the cabinet formation, a topic that provokes all the visitors of Lebanon and does not prevent the US ambassador from diagnosing the Lebanese predicament from an Israeli perspective. Lebanon that is engulfed by economic concerns, and social crises, will not witness political stability even when the international and regional green or yellow lights are given to force the Lebanese to form their long-awaited government, and will remain in an unstable state, since it is not meant to enjoy calm as long as it antagonizes with Israel. Lebanon is not meant to enjoy stability because experiences have proven that it was able to humiliate the Zionist enemy. Therefore, it will move from one stage to another, and the Arabs or foreigners will not be allowed to reduce Lebanon economic or social burdens, even if cabinets are formed, ministries are distributed, and dossiers are exchanged.
