The Religious Authority H.E. Sayyed M. H. Fadlullah delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, 8th of August 2008 A.D., 6 Sha'aban 1429 H, several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.
The First Sermon
Imam Al-Hussein: The personification of the Message of Islam:
Allah says in His Glorious Book. Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying. In the last few days, we met with the anniversary of the birth of Imam Hussein on the third of the month of Sha'aban, the birth of Abu Fadl Al-Abbass on the fourth and the birth of Imam Ali bin Al-Hussein, Zein Al-Abideen on the fifth.
These shining names in their spirits and struggle for the cause of Allah as well as their knowledge which gives the minds of the people the depth they need, and their practice and belief that gives the hearts of Muslims the feelings of good, love and faith and makes their lives based on justice and on what Allah pleases Allah.
When we remember Imam Hussein’s birth anniversary we feel the joy of the Message
Because at a time we live the sadness of the tragedy, we feel that this tragedy has a joyful aspect. The joy of the Message in the movement of Imam Hussein (a.s.) and the joy of the blossoming of the spiritual and moral and humanistic values in his personality. The Imam was an embodiment of his grandfather (p.): his mind was a part of his and his life was a part of his.
This is what we feel when we listen to the Prophet's saying: I belong to Hussein and Hussein belongs to me, since the Message was embodied in Muhammad (p.), Ali (a.s.), Fatimah (a.s.) and Imams Hassan (a.s.) and Hussein(a.s.) who represented the absolute purity that of the mind, the spirit, the body and the movement.
In one of the statements of Imam Hussein in the beginning of his march, he says: "I did not revolt for the cause of evil tyranny or corruption. I rose to seek reform in my grandfather's nation, whoever accepts me –not for myself but-by accepting the truth, then Allah is higher than the truth. And whosoever rejects me, then I will bear patiently until Allah judges between me and them, and He is the best Judge."
He saw the nation with all its points of weakness and the corruption inside it as a big responsibility he had to shoulder. It is Allah's trust with him just as it was with his father and brother before him.
The responsibility of the Message
We also read in his letter to the people of Basra the beginning of his march: Now then! Verily Allah has chosen Prophet Mohammad (p.) above all His creatures and granted him (the prestige of) Prophethood and chose him for the apostleship. Then the Almighty took him towards His mercy (death) after the Prophet having guided all people towards the truth, and after having propagated the message for which he was sent. Thus we are his Household (Ahlulbayt), friends, vicegerents and his successors and are more worthy of succeeding him than anyone else (we have the right to lead through the Messenger and by God’s orders). Then our people tried to precede us in this matter and we withdrew to avoid dissentions (to preserve the unity). We cherish peace although we consider ourselves more worthy and deserving of it (Caliphate) than them. I have sent towards you my messenger and I invite you to the Book of Allah and the tradition (sunnah) of the Prophet, for I see that the traditions (sunnah) have been destroyed (by this oppressive rule) and innovations have crept up. Hence if you pay heed to my words and obey my command, then I shall guide you to the Righteous Path. And peace be upon you and Allah's blessings and mercy.
Thus the Imam's movement aimed at fighting all injustice and oppression. He says in his will to his son Ali bin Al-Hussein: "My son: Never be unjust to those who do not have any one to support them against you except Allah.
He also said to those who try to reach their goals by disobeying Allah, like those who stand with the unjust to attain some personal interests, "Who tries to achieve something through acting disobediently to Allah will miss what he expects and fall in what he fears”.
It is reported that a man said to Imam Al-Hussein that doing good to those who do not deserve it is a waste.
The Imam disagreed and said that doing good is like rain. It falls on everybody the good and the evil. When man does something good he should do it from the love of good in itself.
He also used to advise people not to undertake to do what they cannot and not to talk about what they do not know or promise what they are unable to realise and not to ask for a reward that is greater than one had done.
Our commitment to Imam Al-Hussein is a commitment to the Message, the cause, justice, and moral values. It is a commitment to be proud in the sense that he expressed in his famous saying: "I will not give you with any hand the way a humiliated person would, nor would I submit like a slave does and that; humiliation and subservience is certainly far from us." This is the slogan of Imam Hussein. If you want to follow the Imam, you have to strike the heads of the enemy and not your own heads. You have to whip the backs of the arrogant and not that of your own, for Al-Hussein is a Message and a cause.
Al-Abbass was a great religious scholar, and a martyr, who struggled for the cause of Allah until he died with his brother Imam Al-Hussein.
It is said that when his right hand was cut off he said: "By Allah, if you cut my right hand, I will always protect my religion.” It is my religion that I am protecting, and if I stand with, Imam Hl-Hussein it is not because I am his brother but because he is the Imam whose obedience is a religious duty.
Imam As-Sadiq describes Al-Abbass saying:
"Our uncle Al-Abass was insightful…, and a firm believer. He fought with Imam Hussein bravely and became a martyr …”
Thus to love Al-Abbass is to be committed to protect the religion and the sacred symbols of Islam; those of the Prophet and his household.
Imam Zein Al-Abideen
There are several scholars who talked about the Imam including a Sunni scholar, Ibn Hujr who says in his book, As-Suwaik Al Muhrikah: Zein Al-Abideen is the one who succeeded his father in his knowledge and asceticism. He used to grow pale whenever he performed Wudhu in preparation for prayer. Asked about the reason, he said: "Don't you know whom I am standing before. How can I not be fearful? "
He (a.s.) was so forgiving that when he (a.s.) was cursed by someone, he ignored him. But the man said: "I am talking to you!" The Imam (a.s.) answered: "And I am turning aside from you since Allah says: Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; But turn away from the ignorant.
Abdullah bin Al-Hassan says: "My mother Fatima bint Al-Hussein used to order me to sit with my uncle Ali bin Al Hussein (a.s.). Thus, whenever I sat with him, I learnt a good thing from him, either to fear of Allah, seeing how he fears Allah, or by learning something from him."
Az-Zahri, was asked by someone: Have you met Ali bin Al-Hussein. He answered: Yes I have and I have never seen anyone better than him. And I have never known that he has a friend in secret or any enemy in public, because even those who love him would envy him and those who hate him would avoid to anger him, because he used to be so sensitive to the feelings of all people.
Imam Ash-Shafii said that the Imam was the best jurist and the most knowledgeable scholar in Al-Medina.
The Imam’s moral’s: Tolerance and Forgiveness
The Imam tells us about how to tolerate the hurt of others saying: "I have not taken a doze of rage better than the one which I did not reward the one who caused it." He also says:
"If a man enjoys these three characteristics, he will be under Allah’s protection and safe from the greatest fear. Whoever has three qualities or one of them will be in the shade of the throne of Allah, the Great and Almighty, on the Day of Judgment, the day when there will be no shade except His shad: He treats people the way he likes to be treated He should do no thing till he knows that (his deed) pleases Allah or angers Him. He should find no fault with his Muslim brother till he frees himself from that fault. For when he frees it from a fault, he finds another fault in it. It is enough for the person that his soul diverts him from the people."
Az-Zahri too relates the definition of fanaticism according to the Imam.
He explained that it is not fanatical to love your people, but to see the evil among them better than the good among others.
Thus fanaticism is not loving your own people, but to support them in wronging others.
The Imam is mostly known for his sadness over the death of his father and for the time he dedicated for worshipping, but when we study his biography and the Islamic society he lived in we will see that he was the teacher of that society, with all scholars and historians coming to him to study and acquire the knowledge they benefit of. Thus when we study the traditions that quote his sayings we will find out that he wanted to raise the level of the nation in all fields. He also used to live with Allah through his famous supplications that tell us how he lived with Allah and how faithful to Him he was. These supplications are a multi-dimensional cultural school which we ought to read to learn how to know Allah, and how to be faithful to Him, as well as learning several humanitarian and social values, and all that elevates man to the highest level of good and becoming closer to Allah.
We love Ahl- el-Beit, because they are the closet to God and the ones who are most faithful to the Message. If we want to follow them, we have to follow their path. They are not a tragedy to recall, although tragedy played a role in their lives. They represent the Message of Muhammad (p.), a message and a cause we should be committed to especially in this era in which the arrogant powers are fighting Islam in its entirety.
May Allah bless them the day they were born, the day they were martyred and the day they will be brought back to life.

In Palestine: A tragic scene
In occupied Palestine, the Jewish Arrogant plan is being implemented according to the previously drawn scheme. The internal Palestinian fighting has initiated a new phase in which brothers are imprisoning and haunting each other in Gaza or the West Bank, with the shameful and disgraceful scene culminating in the image of tens of Palestinians, seeking refuge in Israel that is trying to present itself in a new picture, although the entire world knows that it is the one responsible for the greatest Palestinian tragedy that started in 1948.
This critical scene is made much more worse by the on-going Israeli settling activities in the West Bank and especially in Jerusalem, with the number of settlers in the West bank reaching about half a million and the areas the Palestinians are banned from about 38:3% of the total West Bank area. In addition, there is the separating wall which confiscates additional lands and besieges the people in their villages.
In such circumstances what is the use of the bilateral meetings between the President of the Palestinian Authority and the enemy's Prime Minister, especially that such negotiations do not emit any hope of establishing a viable Palestinian state. How could we hope knowing that the Jews have, since Palestine was occupied, put their stakes on the elements of time that is lost through giving the Palestinian false rosy dreams, without having to face any pressure from the UN and the Arab states which raised the white flag to the enemy before their peace initiative in the Beirut Summit. Meanwhile, the Resistance continued to teach the enemy additional lessons and forced it to yield its to conditions.
We say to the Palestinians that the state of the Arab countries and the Arab League is catastrophic just as the Islamic states and Organization of the Islamic Conference which are afraid even of making statements that support the Palestinians and their cause. But the biggest tragedy lies in the self-whipping operation which the Palestinians are practicing through their internal fighting, and taking prisoners in a way that suggests to all that the concern over their smaller entities have become bigger than the concern over the Palestinian unified entity.
I appeal to our Palestinian brothers to stop this series of events, and to appreciate the dangers of this struggle that might drive the people from the state of steadfastness and confrontation to the state of despair and fatigueless, thus enabling the Zionist Entity and its allies, especially the American Administration, to carry out their plan of completing the Jewish project and confiscate what is left of the land, the decision and the cause.
We also appeal to those who still have some measure of conscience and dignity left in the entire Arab and Muslim world to hasten to support this wounded and plagued people whom the entire international arrogance stood against, in support of the Zionist strategy and out of its deep hatred to the Arabs and Muslim.
An American-Israeli war against Iran
Then, there is the American and European political and media war against Iran. This war that takes in every stage a new little that requires the deployment of most industrial and nuclear powers against Iran, relying on false pretences that claim that this peaceful project could turn into a military one.
We know, just as these states do, that they are recruited by the Zionist Entity whose officials continue to ask the Americans to pressurize their European allies to keep the issue hot, and to reassure Israel that is not satisfied by all its nuclear arsenal, the American arms and the treaties that linked it to the American rocket system.
The Iranian peaceful nuclear project has become a part of the Israeli dossier in which America and the Western states play complementary roles the last of which is the server economic blockade.
We warn that this represents a declaration of a political and economic war against a major Islamic country to prevent it from acquiring a scientific technological knowledge. This Arrogant world does not want an Islamic country to emerge as technological and civilized model that is self-satisfied.
This means that the Muslim peoples and the opposition movements should prepare to confront these pressures by the available capabilities and by the adequate means.
Lebanon: A civilized formula for confirming the Resistance's role
Going back to our internal issues in Lebanon, everyone has noticed how the enemy was somehow shocked when the ministerial statement considered the Resistance along with the army and the people as responsible for liberating the land. It has started to talk about the increasing force of the Resistance and its ability to intercept the Enemy's warplanes.
It might have sent new message to the UNIFIL forces to take action, in order to put the UNIFIL in a confrontation with the Resistance. It has also asked the US Administration not to help the Lebanese Army, since it fears that in case it engages in another aggression against Lebanon, it might have to pay a higher price as a result of the coordination between the army and the Resistance.
We believe that there is in this Israeli fear and American concern towards what was stated in the Ministerial statement something we can build on, since we look forward for a Resistance that supports, and not cancel the state.
It is a resistance that plays a complementary role to that of the army and that supports the army in safeguarding the achievement of the liberation preventing aggression and liberating the rest of the land. We also look forward for a state that protects the Resistance fighters, respects their movement, their struggle and their big efforts. We also want the country to start a serious and objective dialogue for a certain formula that could be a model to the Arab and Muslim world that displays how could a popular resistance defeat the enemy then establish with the rest of the country's elements a real consolidation with the state that it strengthens and at the same time is strengthened by it.
We say to all parties in Lebanon, you have succeeded in formulating the ministerial statement that is now behind you.
What is left now is to establish the strong and responsible state that opens up on the problems and needs of its citizens, especially the electrical power that the citizens pays twice for. Moreover the price of fuel is consuming what is left of the citizens’ ability to withstand the tough social and living conditions.
As for the phone it is actually two phones. The fixed and the mobile while the school fees in private schools are more than the citizen's salary for a whole year. The leaders know that agriculture in Lebanon is dying while the industry has been weakened by the aggressions, especially in the Southern suburb where the factory owners did not receive any compensation. They are busy in the struggle for forming the cabinet and formulating the ministerial statement, but totally oblivious of the citizens who live under the line of poverty.
The citizens hear about the state but they do not see it, they have waited long years for it to have a shelter that protects and take care of them but they were disappointed especially that those who raise the slogan of the state had previously destroyed it on the heads of the people and became leaders. Now they have started to deploy the people who are deprived from their right in a decent living to attend electoral allies that the sectarian leaders are preparing for to incite sectarian and partisan fanaticism… Thus, we ask the new ministers: Do you consider the ministerial post an honour that makes you look at the people from your high position downward or a responsibility to search for the best solutions to the problems of the citizens. We hope that this government would assume its responsibilities in an honest and faithful way and to pursue a carefully studied agenda in order to build an independent and effective state that is responsible for its citizens.
