To believe is to be Pious

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

The Religious Authority H.E. Sayyed M. H. Fadlullah delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, 16th May 2008 A.D., 11 Jamadi'I 1429 H, several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon

Allah says in His Glorious Book:

Say: "O ye my servants who believe! Fear your Lord, in (the reward) for those who do good in this world. Spacious is Allah's earth! Those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward without measure.

Allah has pointed out in the Holy Quran to a member of issues He wanted the Muslims to learn about by suggesting to the Prophet to tell them about them by starting the verse "say" suggesting that the matter is of a great significance that they ought to grasp.

In this Ayah, Allah wants the Prophet to tell the true believers that they should fear Allah, and be pious, for piety is the straight path that Allah wanted His servants to follow, since it is not enough to believe in Allah, The Most Exalted, and then be free to do whatever you want. If you believe you have to be pious by obeying Allah's commands, and then good is the reward, "for those who dogood in this world". Allah does not waste the good deeds of any human being and He has promised them to be rewarded generously in exchange for the good deeds they perform in this life. He also tells them that Allah's earth is spacious meaning that if you feel that you cannot lead honest and free life in a certain land you have to move to another land, since all the land is Allah's.

And this what Allah has said to the downtrodden who fell victim to the pressures of the arrogant who misguided them and led them to unbelief Allah says: When angels take the souls of those who die in sin against their souls, they say: "In what (plight) Were ye?" They reply: "Weak and oppressed Were we in the earth." They say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to move yourselves away (From evil)?" Such men will find their abode in Hell,- What an evil refuge

About this issue, Imam Ali explains that man should move to another land if he cannot be free in the land he is living in. he says: There is no country that is better then the other. The best is the one that supports you. It is true that one has to defend his country and his dignity. But if things go wrong and the oppressor dominates, he has to immigrate to establish a new front for power and justice.

Devotion in action

Then Allah tells His Prophet(p.) that he has to offer his own account to the people. The Prophet's role is not confined to conveying the Message. But also to be personally responsible for applying its teachings and laws. Say: "verily I commanded to serve Allah with sincere devotion and I am commanded to be the first who bow to Allah in Islam.” I am not one of those leaders who call for a platform without being personally committed to it. Say: "I would if I disobeyed my Lord, indeed have fear of the penalty of a Mighty Day".

This is what the infallible Prophet (p.) says. He wanted to stress the idea that there is no special relation between Allah and any of the people even if he was most beloved by Him.

He also stresses the fact that action and obedience are the means that draw man closer to Allah.

And this is what the Prophet's and the pious and good people did. They became closer to Allah through their good deeds, obedience and calling the people to worship Allah. It is Allah I serve with my sincere devotion. Serve what you will besides Him. I am calling you to serve Allah. If you do not respond serve whoever you like but you have to bear the responsibility of not serving Allah. Say: Truly those in loss are those who lose their own souls and their people on the Day of Judgement: Ah! That in indeed the real and evident loss. Allah wants you to win His satisfaction, love and forgiveness and to educate our families on worshiping Allah and obeying Him. This is what should we do, while the mentality that dominates the attitude of some parents is how to enable their children attain a position in this world and they forget about their future in the other world.

The real loss:

The real loss is not the loss of money or position, it lies in not gaining Allah's satisfaction on the Day of Judgment. They shall have Layers of fire about them and Layers (of fire) below them, with this does Allah warn off his servants. "O My servants, then fear ye Me".The social, religious and educational line Allah, The Most Exalted, wants the people to follow is based on this rule: To keep off from the worship of the idols and turn to Allah, The Most Exalted. Those who follow the idols or laws that do not adopt Allah's law and do not believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Message, are actually worshipping them. Worship is not merely praying and fasting; it is in essence to obey. Those who listen to the word, and follow the best (meaning) in it are those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones endued with understating.

Worshipping God and not following idols is the bases of the Message of all prophets. Allah says in Annfahl Surah: For We assuredly sent amongst every People a messenger, (with the Command), "Serve Allah, and eschew Evil": of the People were some whom Allah guided, and some on whom error became inevitably (established). So travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied (the Truth). That is why we have to stay away of all idols, whether political, social or religious. There are only two lines: A positive one that is essentially the worshipping of Allah and a negative one that is the worshipping of idols. We have to follow the positive line and educate our families and children on it, so that we will stand before Allah and earn His pleasure and nothing but His pleasure.

The Second Sermon

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Spreading Chaos

The Arab and Muslim region is facing a dangerous state of political and security chaos that is fuelled by many international positions led by the United States, that are trying to undermine the region as a means of dominating it, whether through inciting sectarian or racial strife or by using the rulers of the region who have submitted to the American dictates and who work for promoting the US strategic interests under vague slogans that agitate strife, confiscate the freedom of the people and resort to a bloody violence that kills women children and the elderly, and then claiming that it was as unintentional error.

It is regretful that the EU, with France and Italy in its forefront, is actually implementing the American arrogant forces that do not respect both Arabism and Islam. They pressurize the peoples of the region, and deceive the Arab and Muslim officials, exploiting their need to support their official positions, and forcing them to buy a lot of arms that they only need in their internal wars, or in the American wars that are waged to defend the American strategic interests, since the peoples of the region are not a part of the American calculations, whose current Administration, headed by Bush, has only one strategy whose name is Israel.

Inthis context, certain Western newspapers have said that the current round of President Bush aims atproviding support to Israel only and not his allies, and that he will not try to put off the fires America and Israel are fuelling which lead to the "shaking of the American hegemony in the Middle East".

President Bush has come to the region to push several Arab countries to normalize their relations with Israel and to assert that the state of Israel is a state of the Jews.

He does not care about the problems this will create for the Arabs living in the Zionist Entity. He is going to meet the Arab officials not to create the realistic conditions to establish the Palestinian state but to gather these officials around Israel in the 60th anniversary of usurping Palestine. Bush has tried to run forward by talking about Iran being the biggest threat to peace in the Middle East, as a result of its peaceful nuclear program and its support of Hizbollah in Lebanon.

We believe, not in defence of these two parties, but because this is the truth, that the American Administration in the real big threat to peace.

This has been proven by political and security actions, whether by occupying Iraq and Afghanistan or its interference in Sudan or Somalia or creating chaos in Lebanon and Syria. Its biggest crime is encouraging Israel to execute barbaric crimes through the American advanced warplanes against the civilians and those who defend their country and through supporting inhumane besiege against the Palestinians.

If Bush is talking about the Iranian support to the Resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, why does not he talk about his absolute support politically, economically and militarily to the Jewish state? If the Iranian peaceful nuclear project constitutes a threat to peace then what about the Israeli nuclear arsenal that it threatens with Iran and the region and that conforms with the American strategy of Chaos in the world? We tell him: He whose house is of glass should not be throwing stones at others. He has to know that hatred to his administration will spread all over the Arab and Muslim world, and that the final word will be that of the peoples who do not find in this president except the image of a beast who is eating the entire world.

The sixtieth Anniversary:

In this atmosphere, Israel celebrates its sixtieth anniversary of usurping Palestine, relying on the Western support that planted it in the heart of the Arab world to create various problems and without any conscience awakening despite all the assassinations, invasions and blockades Israel is committing, because it does not believe in the humanity of these people, but only the humanity of the Jewish people.

The Pope has, as we read in a statement he issued, thanked God that Jews have "owned the land of their ancestors". He expressed his sincere wishes on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of establishing the Zionist Entity. We feel sorry for this statement that does not conform with the spiritual and humanitarian values of Christianity, and we would like to ask the Pope: What humanistic and spiritual value is there in expelling, continuous massive killings and massacres since the establishment of the Jewish entity?

Does the Jewish presence in Palestine thousand of years ago makes them the owners of the land from a religious point of view? Does Christianity believe in this legitimacy that is based on injustice and usurpation and condemned by all historical, scientific and civilised principle? We do not know why the Pope does not talk openly about the Jewish massacres and their starvation blockade, or about the Palestinian right of return. Do not the Palestinians deserve a word form him? Is it enough to talk in general about easing the pains of the Palestinians, without getting into details? Should not he say to the usurping Jews: get out of Palestine.

Germany, the country that the Pope comes from, is the one that persecuted the Jews who were embraced by the Arabs and Muslims in their countries for centuries. It would have been politically correct that Germany or the West should have given them a land as a compensation and not help them throw a nation out of their country.

Lebanon: The Country of settlements

Lebanon, as we have always said: is a country of consensual agreements and not that of one party winning over the others. All parties need to get out of impasse; there is also a dire need for the establishment of a national unity government that plans to promote the country's general interests and vital issues, taking into consideration its religious diversity and not the foreign associations that provide nice talks but no realistic solutions. Even when they talk about military support they do not give the army the weapons that enable it to defend Lebanon against any Israeli aggression because they believe, especially the US, that no country should be stronger than Israel.

We call on all parties, especially the religious and political leaders, not to talk about sectarian strife as if it actually exists since it does not exist except in the minds of those who are addicted to the sectarian rhetoric, while the reality has proved that the people live the Muslim and national unity with its true and honest spontaneity that has nothing to do with the complications of politics and politicians, or even the rhetoric of certain religious positions.

As we welcome any consensus step that aims at gathering the Lebanese around the table of dialogue and understanding despite the hidden reservations launched by the American Administration, we emphasize that the participants in the dialogue should rise above their political and confessional fanaticism and think of Lebanon as a people and a nation where everyone can share its protection and development, so that Lebanon can be once again an example for citizenship where all sects do not feel defeat and where discord is part of the political balance that enriches the country.
