Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.): An Ideal to Follow

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

His Eminence, the Religious Authority Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Safar, 7th 1431 H. - January, 22nd 2010. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon

The Imam: A role model

The seventh of Safar is the anniversary of the death of Imam Al-Hassan Bin Ali (a.s.), whom the Prophet (p.) called, along with his brother Al-Hussein (a.s.): "The masters of Heaven's youth." He (p.) also said about them: "These two children of mine are Imams whether they rise or sit down" – an allusion to whether they sought to revolt or not, and: "O Allah, I love them, and I ask You to love them and love whosoever loves them." In these Hadiths, the Messenger of Allah (p.) aimed at embedding the virtues of Al-Hassan and Al-Hussein in the conscience of Muslims so as to model after them and commit to their true line of Islam.

This is what the Imamate of the Members of the House (a.s.) means. We ought to abide by the Islam they embodied in their sayings and deeds in all life's aspects. Thus, when we talk about their times of joy and grief, we ought to relate them to those of Islam. The Members of the House (a.s.) were dedicated to Islam as a whole and to the entire humanity; therefore, we ought to associate all their lives, thoughts, and principles with our present times, so as to enrich our reality by their Imamate, rather than confine them to our fanaticisms and complications.

Al-Hassan (a.s.)'s virtues and wisdom

The best way to learn about Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) is to read what Imam Zein Al-Abideen (a.s.) said about him: "Al-Hassan Bin Ali (a.s.) was the best and greatest worshiper in his times, the most ascetic person who feared Allah and the best of men. When he went to Hajj (pilgrimage), he went on foot, and mostly barefooted, and if he recalled death, resurrection, and the path on the right way, he would cry. If he mentioned or recalled Allah, he would cry until he fell unconscious. When he used to pray, he would quiver. And if heaven and hell were mentioned, he shuddered as if he were bitten by a snake or a scorpion and asked Allah for heaven and not hell. When he used to recite "O believers" from the Holy Quran, he would say: "I stand up for Your service, O God! I stand up for Your service!" Moreover, whenever you met him, he would be mentioning Allah."

Imam Al-Hassan (a.s.) used to preach to people and say: "

O’ Son of Adam! Abstain from the unlawful and you will be a worshipper, and be content with what Allah has predestined for you, you will be satisfied, be benevolent to those who take up proximity in your neighborhood, and you will be a Muslim. Befriend people in the same manner you would like them to befriend you, and you will be just. You have seen before you people who have accumulated a lot of wealth, without them caring if they got their wealth from Halal or Haram means, and built houses and had a lot of hope, but their buildings turned into ruins and their houses became graves. O' Son of Adam! Since the day you left you mother's womb your life has been on the decrease. Therefore, avail yourself of that between your hands for the hereafter, because the believer takes provisions (from this world) and the disbeliever only takes his leisure (from this world)."

O loved ones! Those are our Imams, and our role models through whom we are further introduced to Islam. Peace be upon our Imam, Al-Hassan Al-Mujtaba, the day he was born, the day he passed away, and the day he will be brought back to life.

The Second Sermon

Occupied Palestine: An ongoing siege

In occupied Palestine, the disasters caused by the Zionist occupation multiply, from the ongoing siege, to usurping more lands, making various arrests, and opening water canals on the people in Gaza; a situation that could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe….

As the colonization campaigns continue, the American Administration tries to set the rules of its new game, suggesting to the Palestinians that all matters are contingent upon their decisions, and hinting that only if they [the Palestinians] return to the negotiations, will the American Administration be able to help them out, instead of exerting pressure on the enemy to put an end to its colonization activities. Thus, the Americans are actually adopting the same language the Israelis address to the Palestinians, which is to return to the negotiations without any preconditions.

Given that we do not deem legitimate the occupation of any part of Palestine, we warn the Palestinian Authority against stepping, once again, into the game of negotiations under the title of exchanging lands, for this project actually represents a great sin, at the legal, political, and geographical levels; let alone treason against the Palestinian generations and the entire nation as well.

The German – Zionist rapprochement

On another level, we witnessed during this week a meeting that took place at the level of the German and Zionist governments, which the enemy's Prime Minister described as a "historic moment". It must be noted that the enemy's Prime Minister asked the German Chancellor to keep the German navy opposite the Lebanese coasts, at a time the enemy continues to make threats against Lebanon and in all directions. Nevertheless, Germany continues to provide the enemy with advanced submarines, which enables it to expand the scope of its aggression and espionage, so the following question cannot but be raised: Are the European states seeking to enter into a partnership with this enemy in any possible future adventure it might carry out against Lebanon or the region?!

Therefore, we call on the Europeans to draw lessons from the events that have taken place in the last few years, and to cease resorting to the policy of double standards and be just, and not to fall into the traps that the United States of America has fallen into at earlier stages, as a result of its occupation and policies towards the peoples of the region. We also call on the Arab and Islamic peoples to stop looking like a weak lamb, for it lures others to further depress and humiliate them.

Lebanon: The quota system

On another level, Lebanon is overwhelmed either by the game of the civil service appointments that are meant to be extended until each official maintains his status and ensures his share, or by the municipal elections that might turn into a new political game, which might lead to a compulsory extension for various reasons. As a result, we would enter into a local political coma, awaiting how things in the region, which is open to many possibilities, will unfold.
