Good deeds are the road to Heaven

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

The Religious Authority H.E. Sayyed M. H. Fadlullah delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, 27th June 2008 A.D, 23 Jamadi'II 1429 H., several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon 

Belief and doing good:

God says in His Glorious Book:

"Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has Faith, verily, to him We will give a new Life, a life that is good and pure and We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions. He also says: But any one that (in this life) had repented, believed, and worked righteousness, will have hopes to be among those who achieve salvation. And: But such as come to Him as Believers who have worked righteous deeds, - for them are ranks exalted."     

In addition to its openness on the intellect, Allah emphasizes in these Ayats that the Islamic faith is not separated from practice. Allah, The Most Exalted, has created this world and created man in it to fill it with good and justice.

Faith is not a personal matter that Allah, The Most Exalted, wants man to keep it within himself. It is a movement that aims at changing the reality in the way that Allah, The Most Exalted, accepts and is pleased by.

Allah, The Most Exalted, has associated belief with good deeds. It is not enough to be a believer without doing good or doing good without being a manifestation of belief.

Belief is what gives the action its spirituality and viability. It elevates man to Allah, The Most Exalted. If action does not emerge from belief it cannot rise to the highest levels.

This association was emphasized by the Messenger (p.) and the Imams of Ahl-el Beit. And this is what we read in their sermons. Imam (a.s.) Ali (a.s.) says: Actions, actions, then the end the end which is a happy one since it is the result of your good deeds.

He then adds "righteousness righteousness," since Allah wants man not to deviate from the straight path he has followed from its beginning to its end. "Patience patience," since righteousness would create difficulties and troubles, which means one should be patient and strong so that he would not be defeated by these problems.

Then there is "piety", which means to fear Allah and abstain from doing what he has prevented. You will have an end (a day you will be held accountable) so be mindful of it.


Imam Ali tells about those who are restless in this life and calls on us not to be of them. He says: Do not be of those who seek their abode with anything except good deeds. There are those who think about Paradise and wish that Allah would bestow this gift on them, but they would not make every effort to reach his goal which involves good deeds and piety for Allah says: And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord; and a Garden, the extensiveness of which is (as) the heavens and the earth, it is prepared for those who guard (against evil (3:133).

Heaven, as Allah says in this Ayah is the reward of piety.

When Imam As-Sadiq was told about a group of people who hoped to be in Heaven and were afraid from Hell, he said: They are liars. Those are the people whom are deceived by false hopes. He who hopes for something should work for it and he who fears something should run away from it, but those who love the good – doers and do not follow their behaviour and those who hate the sinners and are among them… those who are afraid that others will go to Hell because of their sins but they are not afraid they too would end up in Hell although their sins are greater. Those who hope that their reward will be bigger than their work", are not truthful and will not be awarded by Heaven.

Imam Ali says to all people that they have to work in this world where one's work will be written for him and when one has a chance to repent, and not wait because then it will be too late.

Allah says: This shall not be in accordance with your vain desires nor in accordance with the vain desires of the followers of the Book; whoever does evil, he shall be requited with it, and besides Allah he will find for himself neither a guardian nor a helper. If any do deeds of righteousness,- be they male or female - and have faith, they will enter Heaven, and not the least injustice will be done to them.

The Messenger (p.) says that the dead person is followed by his children money and his deeds. His money and children will return but his deeds will stay with him. He also says: When man dies his acts come to an end, but three: recurring charity – which is like running water, meaning people will continue to benefit from it- or knowledge by which people benefit or a pious son who prays for him... But we, in general, care about the job and the career of our children but we do not care about their future in the Hereafter.

 He also says: There are seven deeds of which man will continue to be rewarded for even after his death. Planting a palm tree – that would feed people after his death, digging a new way for a river to flow building a mosque or bequeathing – printing – Allah's book, teaching people by either actual teaching or writing books, and begetting a child who will beg Allah's forgiveness for him after his death.

How to win Paradise

Imam Ali says: What difference is there between a deed whose pleasure passes away leaving behind it the pangs of pain and punishment and the deed whose harshness comes to an end leaving behind heavenly rewards and blessings.

When you commit adultery or steal money you might enjoy it, but this pleasure will end and what will remain is the responsibility and the subsequent punishment, while when you worship Allah and give charity to people, all the hard work and the feeling of being tired will pass by and you are left with their rewards.

Finally there is a Surah in the Holy Quran that guides us to the road of success on both the individual and social levels:

Allah says: "I swear by time. Most surely man is in loss, except those who believe and do good and enjoin on each other truth and patience",since truth is bitter and needs a lot of patience to stick to it.

Your life is going to end and when it does you are left only with your work.

"So, he who has done an atom's weight of good shall see it.

And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it."

The Second Sermon

The American Policies are Israeli in content and performance

The news and facts are still confirming that the United States does not have a foreign policy towards the Middle East, but an Israeli one.

The last development in this respect was the freezing of an arms deal with Lebanon that is worth about 400 million Dollars, because the Lebanese Army cannot be relied on. The American Administration decided it is enough to provide the Lebanese Army with light weapons, in addition to training. It is also noteworthy that some Arab states have provided the Lebanese Army with some helicopters, but with no rocket launching capacities. They are afraid that America and Israel do not want Lebanon to possess the weapons that would enable it to defend itself against an Israeli aggression.

We ask all rational or wise people in Lebanon and outside it: is it acceptable that in such circumstances of preventing Lebanon from having the ability to defend itself, and at a time a ceasefire has not been proclaimed by the UN Security Council, and faced by all this international protection of Israel that supports it to the extent of supporting any future aggression against Lebanon to revenge for its successive defeats… Is it logical in these circumstances to talk about disarming the Resistance which the Lebanese have witnessed how it protected them and liberated their lands.

The civilized logic says that he who possesses strong cards does not throw them especially in view of the great challenges and threats that face our Muslim world and in the absence of any moral values in today’s international politics that is dominated by the arrogant powers.

Europe and Israel

The attitudes of most European countries seem to confirm that their humanitarian values have been crashed by Israel that was lately visited by the French President. In this visit he has disavowed, before the Israeli Knesset, the principle of the freedom of nations that was raised by the French revolution. He has emphasized the protection of Israel, the state that was built on the ruins of a people that was expelled out of its land by force.

But we did not hear him, or any other European official, say a word about protecting the Palestinians who are facing barbaric massacres and a suffocating besiege…

Then there is the visit the French President made to the family of the Israeli prisoner, Shalit, ignoring the sufferings of thousands of Palestinian detainees and the barbaric torture they are subjected to. Although we heard protests against this inhuman torture inside Israel we did not hear any international or even Arab protests, since they do not respect the humanity of the Palestinians.

It is quite ironic and funny that the French President considers the Iranian crisis to be the biggest crisis in the world, since the Iranian nuclear project is a peaceful one. Even if it were a military one, how could it be the most dangerous in the world with all the nuclear arsenals the super powers have with Israel having more than 200 nuclear weapons. Moreover, Israel has conducted a big military manoeuvre, in which 100 F-15 and F-16 war planes participated to practice a possible attack against the Iranian nuclear facilities. Such a development could only be seen as a part of the psychological war America is waging against Iran, since Israel would not dare to strike Iran unless America gives it a green light.

They are trying to intimidate the nation, and especially the Arab peoples, by saying that the nuclear deployment, including that of the Israelis, is one of peace while the Iranian peaceful nuclear project is one of war.

The European Union: A political and economic dictatorship


The EU has responded to the American President demand to impose new diplomatic and economic sanctions on Iran, and have thus turned into dictatorships that pressurize the freedom of the Muslim world states that are trying to acquire, scientific experience so as to impose their political and economic conditions.

It is regretful that the Muslim World that was not able to turn into a self –sufficient power that exports its wealth to the world according to its own conditions has turned into scattered fragments that yield to the policies of the super powers, with respect to how it manages its resources, as we have seen in trying to force it to increase oil production without any economic need, since the rise of the oil price is due to speculation and not to any shortage in production.

Lebanon the prison

The local and external game is still controlling Lebanon's security situation as well as forming the government, which everybody expects it to be born by a caesarean operation. Many have been convinced that the exchange of accusations that is hindering its birth is an expression of the intervention of the external powers including the Arab countries and the superpowers, as well as Israel's intelligence agencies that is tampering with the country's security in one way or another.

Perhaps some of the countries of the region do not want the Doha Agreement to succeed and seek to overwhelm the country with security problems or with sectarian divisions within the Islamic community through certain religious or political parties that do not see in America or Israel a security threat to Lebanon, but rather in the followers of this sect or that, thus yielding to the pressures or certain regional or international parties that aim at inciting sectarian strife.

What aggravates this danger lies in that some regional states have adopted sectarian policies in the region to promote their interests and have even begun to discriminate between their own citizens based on their sects.

The spiritual summit that was held recently in Lebanon has produced a consuming communiqué which the Lebanese do not feel that it offers any solution for the crisis in Lebanon, since they (spiritual leaders) are not the ones who manage the affairs of the country and they only represent the frontage of the sectarian regime. Thus, their meeting can suggest a certain relief from the suffocating situation between it does not have a key to the solution.

There is no longer any effectiveness of any summit in Lebanon, for we have lost those who cherish the values of right, justice, love and mercy, and began to wonder about in the mud of hatred and fanaticism. The people are held in a big prison which the big and small players play with.
