Sayyed Fadlullah:Such an American domination and such an international terror that crushes the rights of nations in the name of fighting terrorism demand a political and media effort to discuss how to save the world from the arms of American and Israeli octopus of injustice and terror, since it will not stop after it eats the Palestinian and Arab rights, but it will then turn towards the rest of the world.

Asked in his weekly seminar the following question:How do you view the US continuous use of the Veto to serve Israeli interest? Is there a role left for the UN?

The Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, said:

The American veto against the Security Council draft resolution that demands the withdrawal of Israel from Gaza is part of the American consistent policy of supporting Israel to the detriment of Palestinian rights that were affirmed in tens of UN resolutions, but which have remained unimplemented as a result of the American vetoes or pressures.

The successive American administrations have since the establishment of the Zionist entity in 1948 taken upon itself to protect it by means of a legal umbrella demonstrated by the veto that is always ready to prevent any condemnation or pressure to withdraw from the lands it occupied. This political support was further reinforced by a military support for an entity that provided a model of injustice that could be unique in history. In addition to the veto, the US used all means of pressure and intimidation to force the other countries to change their positions and at least abstain from supporting the Arab or Palestinian rights.

And then if a resolution somehow passed, the US would use all its power to prevent implementing it and turn it to mere ink on paper.

The US has used the right to veto about 42 times in the last 50 years or so to prevent the world from condemning the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinians. It even vetoed some of the resolutions that express "regret" for occupying Arab lands, and others that call on Israel to refrain from committing any acts against “the Arab population in the occupied lands". To be sure, resolutions that talked about Palestinian right of self-determination or those that condemned the attack on the Aqsa Mosque or the invasion of Lebanon in 1982… were vetoed.

It also vetoed the Israeli highjacking of a civilian Libyan passenger place in 1986… It is as if Washington is telling the world that it has to accept all forms of Israeli terror, and that condemning Israel is forbidden, since it has a role to play in the region : to present the American model of "democracy" to a region seen by the US as "backward and primitive".

This American hateful and unjust stand towards the Palestinian problem, and this comprehensive support to Israeli aggression were culminated by Bush’s letter of guarantees in which he cancelled the Palestinian right of return and legitimized Israeli settlements… These developments clearly affirm that the matter is no longer that of political or military support.

It has reached the level of turning the UN into a nominal and formal entity and using it to justify domination, killings and invasions, which will not change even if the UN Secretary General would stand up and say that what America did in Iraq is illegitimate since it happened after the fact.

The Veto has turned into a weapon to oppress the nations and put an end to their legitimate rights. It has become the bat the big powers use to intimidate the downtrodden nations. It has legitimized terror through the protection it has provided to the American terror and by violating all the fundamental principles the UN was established to promote, especially protecting human rights and promoting self-determination.

We believe that there is a grand international drama going on, with the UN used as a stage on which the American and Israeli plots take place. But this drama is not a comedy, for it is meant to make the entire world understand that this is the only drama that could unfold. Otherwise, they will be faced with the American veto and the nuclear arsenal.

We believe that new American and Israeli principles to liquidate the Palestinian problem are being implemented on several levels… The UN no longer provides any protection for the Palestinian people and the Israelis are talking frankly about putting an end to the so-called Palestinian state… The only thing the UN can do is to refer any problem to the General Assembly even if the International court of Justice has condemned it, as in the case of the separating wall.

Thus, the UN has turned into a wall where are complaints are hung, while anything that has to do with pressurizing the Arabs reaches the Security Council right away, and is periodically followed up by the Secretary General, like Darfur, resolution 1559 and Iraq ,to name but a few.
