Friday, June 15, 2018 is the first day of Shawwal

Date: 06/06/2018 A.D 22/09/1439 H

The Juristic Office at the Institution of His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra), issued a statement in which it declared that Friday, June  15, 2018 is the first of the month of Shawwal; hence Eid Al-Fitr.

Following is the text of the statement:

The astronomical data reveal that the new crescent (central conjunction) for the month of Shawwal 1439H. will be born on Friday, June  15, 2018 A.D. at 19:43 (GMT) that is, at 22:43 p.m. Friday, June  15, 2018 Beirut time. It is impossible to sight it by the naked eyeor by the aid of telescopes on Wednesday evening since the crescent, will set before the sun. Thus, the following day, Thursdayis the day that completes the month of Ramadan. On Thursday evening the crescent, can be seen easily by the naked eye in several parts of the Americas and West Africa. It can also be seen by the naked eye, provided that the weather is clear in several regions in Africa and the east and south of the Arabian peninsula,as well as other Arab states, and in south Asia and Australia.

It could also be seen by the naked eye in Beirut with the help of certain instruments, if the weather is clear. Thus the first day of the month of Shawal isFriday, June  15,  in  the western an eastern hemispheres, according to the jurisprudential opinion of the late Sayyed Fadlullah (ra), which deems it sufficient to sight the crescent, even if by the aid of telescopes in any region in the world, provided that the other regions share a part of the night with the regions of sighting to maintain that the new month is established there too. In addition, the month of Ramadan would have completed 30 days on Thursday.

We invoke Allah to bring us together over the good, blessings and piety and to accept our fast, and  guidethe believers to fulfill and maintain all the duties that satisfy and please Him; He is All-Hearing and Responsive.
