The Juristic Office of the Institution of His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra), issued a statement in which it announced that Friday, December 30, 2016 is the first of the month of Rabi’ II 1438 H. based on the jurisprudential opinion of His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra).

Following is the text of the statement:

The new crescent (central conjunction) for the month of Rabi’ II 1438 H. will be born on Thursday, December 29, 2016 A.D. at 06:53 a.m. (GMT) that is, at 08:53 a.m. Beirut time. On Thursday evening (Friday eve), the crescent can be sighted by the naked eye in the western side of Central America, and it can be sighted by the aid of telescopes in some of the regions of North America and South America (see image 1). Therefore, the first of the month of Rabi’ II 1438 H. is on Friday, December 30, 2016 is for the regions that share a part of the night with the regions where the sighting is possible, and on Saturday, December 31, 2016 A.D. for the regions that do not share a part of the night with the regions where the sighting is possible. This is based on the jurisprudential opinion of His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra) who considers that it is enough to establish the possibility of sighting even if by the aid of telescopes in any region that share even a part of the night with the regions where the sighting is possible.

We invoke Allah to make it a month of good and blessings on the Muslim nation, crowned with victory over the enemies, He is the Most Merciful.
