An Islamic judge rules that tattoos are forbidden

News…

The Head of the Sunni Court in Baabda, Judge Sheikh Ahmad Darwish Al-Kurdi, said during an interview: Tattoos, in general, are forbidden, for the Prophet (p.) said: “May Allah curse the tattooer and the tattooed,” meaning that Allah curses the woman who asks for a tattoo and the one who draws it, for this is an alteration of Allah’s creation, which is a Satanic act, for once Satan obsesses his followers, they become unconvinced with their forms and looks.

He added: “May Allah curse the one who plucks (facial hair) and the plucked,” for this also a beautification act.

He also said: If the woman does not have eyebrows, and she marks her eyebrows with a Kuhl pencil so that she would not look repellent to the people or to her husband, then there is no problem. As for tattooing the eyebrows, it is forbidden, even if it temporary, pointing that all kinds of tattoos should be avoided, except for he who undergoes an accident and he wants to restore his face to its previous form; in this case, tattooing might become a necessity, yet this necessity ought to be estimated to ensure that it is not surpassed.

Sheikh Al-Kurdi also advised the girls of this generation to abide by the teachings of Allah, the Most Exalted, and His Messenger (p.).

Comment…

The Hadith on which the Islamic judge relied to forbid the tattoo is not established as authentic. Suppose it is, it has a different interpretation; it does not refer to plucking the bodily or facial hair or beautification; but rather, in the cases of deception and hiding the flaws and revealing the opposite of the reality…

Tattoos, in principle, are not forbidden, except when it takes the form of beautification before a foreign man. A believer should make a balance between his physical needs of cleanness and beautification and taking into consideration the legal restraints in his relation with the other and the commands of Allah regarding the veil, decency and chastity. It is acceptable for the woman to do that for her husband to fulfill his needs and satiate his sexual desires and immunize him against any form of deviation.
