Insulin shots while fasting

Who has not heard about diabetes; the disease that the adults and youngsters suffer from and that is spreading rapidly? Some diabetic patients should take insulin shots, does this invalidate their fasting?

Some ask about the ruling of having an insulin shot half an hour before Iftar takes place, as prescribed by the doctor. A Mufti answered that there is no problem in taking insulin shots under the skin while fasting, and fasting would not be invalidated, for if it happened to reach the stomach, it would not be through the usual routes; thus, fasting is deemed valid…

Some scholars consider that insulin shots do not break the fast, for they are neither a kind of food nor drink. Thus, according to the rules, insulin shots do not break the fast unless new evidence is provided…

On its part, one of the committees of ruling-derivation (Ifta’) and research consider that there is no problem in taking the insulin shot during the day for treatment, and the faster should not make up for this day, knowing that it is preferred if the shot is taken at night, unless it causes hardships and difficulties to the faster…

On this matter, His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra), says that insulin shots do not break the fast, for they are a medication and not nutrients. Nevertheless, if fasting inflicts harm and damage on the diabetic patients, then fasting is invalid in this case, based on the principle of the impermissibility of harming oneself…
