Resurrection and the deepening of faith

By His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra)

Allah, the Most Exalted, says: “And verily the hour will come; there can be no doubt about it,” (22:07); not in the sense of discussing the possibility of its existence, since the ability of creating what is similar to it is a proof on the ability of creating it, and not in the sense of its occurrence, since Allah is the ultimate truth that confirms the truth that takes place in the reality just as He confirms it in His revelations to His messengers. “Allah will raise up all who are in the graves,” (22:07), to hold them accountable for their deeds. Actually, this is what negates the idea of the absurdity of man’s existence and gives life the meaning of truth through what it represents of the movement of responsibility from the beginning till the end, suggesting that commissioning and reward or punishment are the secret of existence. This is what should be present in man’s conscience and mind when he thinks about his existence. He should not regard in it as a chance for having fun and fooling around. Rather, existence is an embodiment of the constant spiritual value that suggests the humanitarian meaning of life as a straight line of fate. In addition, man would deeply feel that his belief in Allah is not an intellectual state as in believing in mathematical equations; but rather, it is a spiritual state, in its very nature, that is reflected in his feelings and turns into a practical embodiment of faith and the Shariah in his awareness and life.

This is the impact that Islam wants the idea of resurrection to leave in man’s existence and belief, so as not to make his existence an absurdity and not to make belief a rigid thought that suggests abstract ideas that get lost in the realm of the imagination instead of being reflected in the movement of reality and become part of the awareness that is open to Allah from the standpoint of responsibility.
