Opening this week, in the RomaEuropa Festival held annually in the Italian capital, Rome, is the play “Made in Heaven”, which addresses the relation between Islam and the West, especially in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, shedding light on the prejudicial treatment the Muslim immigrants have to deal with, mainly in terms of the ongoing talk about the inevitable clash of civilizations…

The writer of the play script, Nicole Borgeat, said that the western society after the 9/11 events witnessed “what is far worse” [sic] due to the spread of “women who wear Niqab - full face cover - bearded mean and groups that threaten our identity and civilization, and the others, i.e. the Muslims, became part of our world against our will; thus, this play came to tackle these situations.”

What we would like to say is that Islam, in its essence, is the religion of peace and amiability. It was sent down to make the good prevail throughout the world, and to get people to know each other, free themselves of any possible misconceptions via dialogue, love and compassion, and discard all forms of racism, discrimination and extremism. Therefore, any work of art should not be based on political considerations or certain events that took place in given circumstances, for Islam has nothing to do with any act of terrorism or extremism. Thus, it is more important if such works of art focus on reading the reality well, so as to cast off any tensions and make the spirit of understanding and amiability prevail, in an attempt to fortify the social and human reality…

In a related context, His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra), says: We ought to take notice of the intellectual and spiritual aspect in our relation with the western civilization so as not to be preoccupied with or dissolved in it and drift away from our Islam as we mix within its different societies. However, we should hold a positive view towards this civilization through the scientific and cognitive accomplishments it has achieved so far, in terms of discovering the secrets of universe, the developments and breakthroughs it made and all the needs of man. We can make our own experience within these societies to acquire all their positive achievements in both science and knowledge…

While being part of those societies, we ought to preserve our authenticity as Muslims who aim at benefitting from the experiences of the other people in science and knowledge and in many other issues related to the reality…

His Eminence (ra) adds: Actually, our problem is not with the western peoples but with the western administrations that aim at dominating our fortunes, and resources, as well as our political and security decisions and the like…
